It has been a long week. We called the Sheriff’s Office here in our county Monday morning, and they called the guy from the Department of Wildlife and Parks. He brought a live trap over for us. We set it out in the duck pen Monday night, and by 10:30 or quarter ’til 11, the raccoon was in the trap. He tried to dig his way out of the trap, which is made of a steel mesh, most of the night. I stayed up for awhile after the raccoon got in the trap to see if there were going to be any more “visitors”. About 1:30A.M., we had a possum running around out in our backyard. He THOUGHT about getting in the duck pen once, but after I went out to see where he was and what he was doing, he wandered off, and, to MY knowledge, has not been back since. And I am happy to report that there has not been anything else in the duck pen since we caught the raccoon.
Tuesday, I called and left a message for the wildlife guy letting him know we had a raccoon for him, and a nice gentleman from a neighboring office stopped by because the guy that had brought the trap out was off that day. Tuesday night I was up every hour and a half or two hours, JUST to make sure nothing was wandering around outside trying to eat my ducks and my goose.
We brought the two ducks that were injured in the house. Put the one that was hurt the worst in a cardboard box, and put the other little one that just has scratches on her head in a rabbit-type cage. I am happy to report that they are both doing okay. The little one went back outside the day before yesterday. She is now deemed “Huffy” ’cause she had started “huffying” herself up and acting like a big, bad duck whenever we’d get near the cage. The other one, the one that was hurt the worst, has now been deemed “Lucky Duck” by my Sister. He’s got a gaping hole in the side of his face that I believe is now an opening into his nasal passage. He had blood all over his face. He has a couple of scratches that actually cut into his bill. He is holding his neck in an ackward position. But he has been improving every day. He was slow in getting started drinking, but he is now trying to bath in his drinking water. And he has been REALLY slow in getting back to eating, but he DID eat a little corn that I threw into the bathtub with him the night before last, and he was nibbling at the grass outside yesterday afternoon…AND he even ate a LITTLE bit out of his bowl of food last night. My Sister stopped by the vet there in town, and got some antibiotic for him Tuesday morning (I think it was), and we’ve been giving that to him to try to help fight off the chance of infection. And we’ve had a problem with the flies wanting to be around him, so yesterday, she stopped and told the vet what was going on, and got some fly ointment to keep the flies away. Okay, so we are a little odd….trying to save a duck like we are, but we’ve done it before…why not do it again? It will still be several days, at least, before he goes back outside, but if we can keep the flies away from him, and get him eating more, I think he’s got a REAL good chance of making it!!!
On the down side of this, I called the store where we got the ducks and geese to start with to see if they could special order me some more, and they can’t. Their hatchery is all done with everything except guineas. But I WILL be doing some checking on-line and see what I can come up with there. If nothing else, we will see about getting some more this next Spring.
Well, that’s been my week….standing guard, doctoring a hurt duck, and playing with MY boy!!!
Did I mention we got 6″ of rain Wednesday morning in the span of about 2 and a half hours? Needless to say, the roads were flooded enough my Sister couldn’t get out here to get her girls, so they stayed ALL day, MUCH to their dismay.
Well, time to put some sunscreen and bug spray on my boy and let him outside for a bit. Catch you all later. Thanks for the notes!!! And I WILL get caught up with everybody again one of these days soon!!! *hugs* to my friends and family
